URBANA, Ill. – The University of Illinois women's tennis team split its Sunday afternoon doubleheader, falling to No. 5 Duke, 4-2, and defeating Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 4-0, at Atkins Tennis Center. The Fighting Illini move to 3-1 on the season.
The Illini swept the doubles competition, securing the point against both Duke and SIUE.
Junior Asuka Kawai and freshman Emily Casati were downed, 6-3, by Yasmine Mansouri and Hannah Zhao of Duke in doubles play allowing Duke to have the advantage. Junior Emilee Duong and freshman Josie Frazier tied it up at one match a piece as the defeated Chloe Beck and Kelly Chen (Duke), 7-5.
Juniors Sasha Belaya and Mia Rabinowitz battled Duke's Margaryta Bilokin and Meible Chi to clinch the doubles point, 7-6. Belaya and Rabinowitz came back from a 2-5 deficit to tie the match up 5-5. The pair took the next game to make it 6-5, but Biolkin and Chi knotted it up 6-6. Heading into a tie breaker, the two duos played a back and forth game, and Belaya and Rabinowtiz came out on top, 10 games to eight, to take the point.
Against SIUE, Kawai and Casati were first to better their Cougars opponents Vanessa Reinicke and Maria Thibault, 6-0. Duong and Frazier notched the doubles point for the Orange and Blue after powering past Lara Tupper and Jill Lambrechts. Â
In singles play against Duke, Kawai was the lone player to notch a point for the Fighting Illini after winning 6-2, 6-2 over Mansouri. Freshman Ashley Yeah fell to her Blue Devil opponent Chi, 1-6, 4-6, to give Duke their first point of the day. Casati was defeated by Summer Dvorak, 1-6, 2-6, and Frazier was downed 5-7, 1-6, by her opponent Beck for Duke to singles points two and three, respectively.
Casati picked up the first singles point for the Orange and Blue against SIUE, as the Deerfield, Ill., native swept past her opponent, Callaghan Adams, 6-0, 6-0. Duong grabbed the next point after she blew by Vizcardor of SIUE, 6-2, 6-1. Yeah finished off the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over SIUE's Tupper, to give the Illini the 4-0 victory against the Cougars.
