CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Fighting Illini sophomore Hamish Carter has been assigned to compete in the three-day 2019 Hungarian World Cup in Szombathely, Hungary on Sept. 6 – Sept. 8.
"We are very excited about Hamish's selection to the Hungarian World Cup," associate head coach Daniel Ribeiro said. "This is just the first step in our process to getting Hamish to become an Olympic caliber gymnast. We fully expect that this will be the first assignment of many in his young Illini career."
The assignment of this competition comes after Carter's completion of the 2019 British Team Championships and the 2019 Men's London Open Championships that took place in August in London, England.
At the British Team Championships, the West Midlands, UK, native finished fifth in all-around with a score of 79.930. Carter finished tied for ninth on floor exercise (13.366), placed eighth on pommel horse (12.833), seventh on still rings (13.133), tied for eighth on vault (13.866) and placed first on high bar (13.866).
Carter placed in the top-10 in four of six events at the London Open, placing 10th on pommel horse (12.800), tying for fifth on still rings (13.300), taking sixth on parallel bar (14.000) and third on high bar (13.600). The Big Ten high bar champion also tallied a 11.650 on floor, a 13.750 on vault, and a 79.100 in all-around.
