Irwin Loud Takes First Place At Illini Open

Illini place second at home meet.
URBANA, Ill. - Fighting Illini redshirt sophomore Irwin Loud won the men's 8K race at the Illini Open Friday night at the UI Arboretum. Irwin came on strong late to take the 8K meet title, and crossed the finish line first with in a time of 25:22.3. Illinois finished second at the home meet with a team score of 33.
"Today was a solid day," said Illinois cross country head coach Sarah Haveman. "Our men did well. We had a lot of freshmen and sophomores racing their first 8K and they handled it well. We are happy for Irwin to be able to come get a win on his home course. He is a perfect example of the positive, selfless, process-oriented student athlete we strive to develop here at Illinois."
Finishing in second right behind Loud was sophomore Logan Hall, who clocked a 25:26.1 finish time. The Illini also saw top-10 overall finishes from sophomore Colin Yandel and redshirt senior Zach Dale, who finished ninth and 10th, respectively. Yandel recorded a finish time of 25:33.4, and Dale came in right behind with a 25:37.6 finish. Rounding out the Illini scorers was freshman Jack Roberts, who timed 25:58.0 in his collegiate debut.
The Illini would receive top-15 performances from redshirt junior Jack LaLonde and freshman Michael Madiol. LaLonde placed 12th and recorded a finish time of 26:01.1. Madiol would place 14th with a time of 26:07.0.
The Illini will train for the next few weeks before heading to the John McNichols Invite hosted by Indiana State University on Saturday, Sept. 21. The men's 8K is scheduled for 8 a.m. CT, and the women's 5K will follow at 8:45 a.m. CT.
