GREENWOOD, Ind. - Fighting Illini track and field senior Joe Haight was named a Google Cloud Track & Field/Cross Country First Team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. Haight is one of 15 Division 1 track & field/cross country student-athletes to be selected as a First Team Academic All-America honoree by CoSIDA .
To be eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-America and All-District award, student-athletes must maintain a 3.30 cumulative GPA, have participated in 50% of team competitions and have spent at least one full calendar year at the institution. Haight was named to the CoSIDA All-District team on May 28. For the All-District honor, he was selected as one of the 10 student-athletes to represent District 5, which covers Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
Joe Haight achieved his third-career All-America honor at NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 5, competing with the Illini men's 4x100m relay. Haight and the Illini relay clocked a finish time of 39.01 to earn a ninth-place finish and Second Team All-America honors. The 39.01 finish was the fourth-fastest in Illinois program history.
Haight also picked up Second Team All-America honors this indoor season, competing on the Illini Distance Medley Relay at 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships in March. At the Alex Wilson Invitational on February 16, Haight and the men's DMR clocked a finish time of 9:29.19, the fastest distance medley relay finish in program history.
In the classroom, Haight has excelled, receiving his degree in Engineering Physics in May and graduating with a 3.95 cumulative GPA. Haight was named a 2019 recipient of the Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship, which is a $7,500 scholarship given to a female and male student-athlete selected by the conference from each Big Ten institution that will be utilized at the student's graduate school.
