CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – 14 Illinois track and field athletes will compete at NCAA West Prelims next week in Sacramento, California after the NCAA announced qualifiers for each event on Thursday. The Illini will contest 11 events at the preliminary round, with each qualifier vying for a spot at NCAA Championships set for June 5-8 at the University of Texas at Austin. Competition at NCAA West Prelims begins Thursday, May 23 and continues through Saturday, May 25.
Held at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State, NCAA West Prelims hosts the first round and quarterfinal rounds for sprints, hurdles and middle distance events. Distance and field events will be contesting semifinals. All three days of action can be streamed on FloTrack with a subscription to the platform.
Senior Devin Quinn highlights the list of Illini qualifiers, fresh off his first-career individual Big Ten title in the 100m on May 12. Quinn will compete in the 100m and 200m at NCAA West Prelims, as well as with the 4x100m relay. Quinn holds the No. 4 qualifying time in the 100m field with his 10.06 finish clocked at the Ole Miss Classic on March 30. His 20.35 200m time recorded last weekend at Big Ten Championships also ranks as the fourth-fastest qualifying time in that event. Quinn earned second-team All-America honors in the 200m and as a member of the 4x100m relay last outdoor season. He was a second-team All-American in the 200m Dash during the 2019 Indoor season.
Three more All-American's from the 2019 Indoor season will also compete for the Illini at NCAA West Prelims. Junior Jesse Reiser and senior Denis O'Callaghan will contest the men's 1500m, and senior Joe Haight will compete in the 400m and with the men's 4x100m relay. Reiser, Haight and O'Callaghan earned second-team All-America honors as part of the men's distance medley relay team during the Indoor season. Haight also earned second-team All-America honors last outdoor season as a member of the 4x100m relay.
Sophomore Jason Shannon and redshirt junior Jacob LaRocca join Quinn, Reiser and Haight as returning West Prelims qualifiers. Shannon will compete as part of the 4x100m relay. LaRocca will contest the Pole Vault for the Illini.
Senior Janile Rogers returns to NCAA prelims for the third time in her career as a member of the qualifying 4x100m relay. This will be her first time competing as an individual at the competition, as she will contest the women's Long Jump at West Prelims. Junior Chisom Nwoko returns to West Prelims to compete in the 400m for the second consecutive year. Seniors Sade' Hargrove and Briana Driver also return to West Prelims for the second straight year to compete with the 4x100m Relay.
Along with O'Callaghan, the Illini have four additional first-time NCAA West Prelims qualifiers. Junior Noah Adams will make his NCAA postseason debut competing in the High Jump. Illini freshmen Bret Dannis (110m Hurdles), Nya Carr (Women's 4x100m) and Declan Rustay (Men's 4x100m) will also make their first appearances at West Prelims.
