IOWA CITY, Iowa - Illinois track & field senior Devin Quinn captured his first-career individual Big Ten title Sunday at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships at the University of Iowa, placing first in the men's 100m Dash. Quinn clocked a Cretzmeyer Track facility record time of 10.11 to earn the gold medal in the event final.
Quinn becomes the 293rd individual Big Ten outdoor champion in Illinois program history. He is the first Illini to win a Big Ten title in the 100m Dash since Brandon Stryganek in 2015. His 10.11 finish time is the fastest Big Ten title winning time by an Illini in the 100m since Anthony Jones' 10.10 finish in 1994.Â
"Devin was magnificent against as good a collection of sprinters as there's been in the conference," said head coach Mike Turk. "I knew after watching him on the 4x100, it was going to take something special for anyone to beat him. He took down the defending champ in winning the 100, and the title of fastest man in the Big Ten is his. Then he comes back with a school record in the 200 and nearly knocks off the three-time defending champ."Â
Not long after taking the Big Ten title in the 100m, Quinn achieved a second-place finish in the 200m Dash. Quinn timed a 20.35 finish time, a new personal-best that now stands as the fastest 200m time in Illinois program history. With his silver medal performance in the 200m, Quinn broke DJ Zahn's progrm record of 20.37 set in 2015.Â
In the first running event of the day, Quinn anchored the 4x100m relay team to a second place finish in the event final. The relay comprised of sophomore Jason Shannon, freshman Declan Rustay senior Joe Haight and Quinn timed a season-best finish time of 39.51 to earn the silver medal.Â
"I'm really pleased with both (men's and women's) 4x100m relay squads," Turk said. "We've been preaching confidence through belief in process, repetition and experience. That's coming together and we have developed elite 4x100m relays squads. They performed at a very high level in a pressure situation. Postseason will be fun with them."Â
The Illini also saw a podium finish on Sunday from senior Jesse Reiser in the men's 1500m. Reiser recorded a finish time of 3:46.02 to take eighth place at the conference meet. This is reiser's second-career podium finish at Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Â
"Jesse Reiser is our comeback of the year man," Turk said. "He missed track season last year and cross country season this year due to injury. He endured all the time off, rehab and set backs to comeback and have a great season. I'm so proud of his maturity and team-first attitude. He's got something special to build on for next year."
In the final event of the day, the men's 4x400m team comprised of freshman Jaden Jackson, senior Konrad Eiring, Haight and sophomore Doug Wilson recorded a season-best time of 3:11.50. The Illini men placed 12th at Big Ten Outdoor Championships with 31 points.Â
"The results for the team aren't where we want them," Turk said. "However, we performed well, showed growth in many areas and had some real shining moments. We have a young squad and the program has a good culture. The team did a great job of being focused, taking care of details and competing to the best of their ability. We are progressing and will continue to progress as long as we focus on the things we can control. Now, its just a matter of remaining committed to the development process."
Up next, Illini athletes that finish in the top-48Â of the West qualifying rankings will advance to NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento, California. The preliminary meet for nationals will be held May 23-25.
