IOWA CITY, Iowa – Fighting Illini men's golf opened play at the Hawkeye Invitational on Saturday, firing a 36-hole tally of 26-under par to sit in second as a team. All five Illini are currently among the top 20 individuals, led by sophomore Varun Chopra who is tied for third and 8-under par in total. Chopra recorded back-to-back rounds of 67 (-4) to set a new career-low 18-hole score. He is joined among the top five individuals by freshman Adrien Dumont de Chassart, who shot 7-under par for the day. Illinois' 36-hole score of 542 marks the third-lowest 36 hole tally in school history.
Host team, Iowa (-29), leads the tournament field after two rounds of play, while UMKC (-9) joins the Illini and the Hawkeyes among the top three teams. Â Tomorrow's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
Chopra opened play on Saturday with a career-low 67 (-4) in the first round. He used two birdies in his first nine holes to negate an early bogey and make the turn at 1-under par, before recording four more birdies on the back nine. Chopra stayed strong throughout the second round, using a birdie on the ninth hole to negate an early bogey. He went on to shoot 4-under par through his final nine holes for a second-round tally 4-under par as well.
Also among the top five individuals, Dumont de Chassart shot 2-under par to start the tournament, posting five birdies for the Orange and Blue. He picked up the pace in his second round, adding six more birdies for Illinois, and finishing the day at 7-under par.
Tied for ninth individually, Tadiotto started the day out strong for Illinois as he posted three consecutive birdies in a span of four holes. He added an eagle and a birdie on the back nine of his first 18, helping to negate two bogeys in his round. Tadiotto continued to build momentum through the day, recording a birdie on the final hole of his first round. He opened the day with a 6-under par 65, matching his career low 18-hole score. He is 5-under par in total heading into tomorrow's final round.
Juniors Michael Feagles and Bryan Baumgarten closed Saturday in a tie for 19th with scores 2-under par. Baumgarten started the day at even par, tallying four birdies in the opening round. He recorded four more throughout his second 18 holes, closing the second round 2-under. Feagles was 1-over par through the first round of play and finished 3-under par for his second round.
THE TOURNAMENT
 A two-day, 54-hole event, the Hawkeye Invitational is hosted by University of Iowa at Finkbine Golf Course (Par 71, 6,884-yards). Sunday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. The Orange and Blue are one of 13 teams in the tournament field, which includes Big Ten foes Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wisconsin, as well as DePaul, Eastern Michigan, Kansas, Kansas State, Oral Roberts, South Dakota State and UMKC.
