Illini Drop Regular Season Finale at OSU

Final Results

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team picked up six event titles but couldn't close out Ohio State on Sunday, as the Buckeyes finished strong for a 406.600-404.000 win at St. John Arena. The meet marks the end of the regular season for Illinois, who will get set to defend last year's conference championship at the 2019 Big Ten Championships, held in Iowa City, Iowa, April 5-6.

Illinois got a strong start on pommel horse in the first rotation from Blake Martin, as the senior registered a career-best 13.750 on the event. The other highlight of the rotation came from Michael Paradise, who posted a 14.900 to win his seventh pommel horse title of the year. The score marked the sixth time this season he has eclipsed a total of at least 14.7.

Jacob Light and Jordan Kovach kicked off the floor rotation with season bests, scoring 13.400 and 13.650, respectively. Senior Johnny Jacobson was next up and he put together the strongest routine of the night on the event with a 14.150 to take the event title. In the next rotation, Illinois scored a 71.400 on vault to take the lead over the Buckeyes and Jacob Light paced all gymnasts on the event, securing a 14.500. The title is the first of the season for the Macungie, Pa., native.

Sunday was the first time for Illini fans to see UIC transfer Satchel Hudson compete in the orange and blue. Hudson kicked off the rings rotation with a 13.150 and sophomore Joel Diaz followed it up with a career-best 13.850. Alex Diab added yet another still rings title to his dominant career on the event, as the senior secured a 14.700 to claim his 28th-career rings title.

UI kicked off the high bar rotation with strong routines from both Ross Thompson (14.100) and Michael Fletcher (14.000) on its way to a team total of 68.550. Thompson's total secured his third-career title on the event. Illinois struggled on parallel bars in the final rotation, posting a season-low total of 60.950.
