No. 25 Illini Fall to Seattle on Final Day of OSU-Tulsa Invitational

TULSA, Okla. – The No. 25 Illinois softball team dropped its final contest of the OSU-Tulsa Invitational, 5-2, to Seattle on a cold Saturday (March 2) afternoon at the Collins Family Softball Complex. The Illini were scheduled to face Syracuse in the day's second game, but it was cancelled due to the cold temperatures.
The Illini (12-4) were led in the weekend by sophomore Bella Loya and senior Veronica Ruelius, each with a .667 batting average in the tournament. Loya notched six hits, three runs and two RBI, while Ruelius registered four hits – including a double and a home run – to go along with a team-high three RBI and two runs.
Senior Taylor Edwards paced the squad in the circle with a 1.00 ERA in 7.0 innings after allowing just one earned run and earning her first save of the season.
The Redhawks (11-7) struck first on a two-run triple and a two-run home run in the second for the 4-0 advantage. The Illini scratched across a run in the third as redshirt-senior Annie Fleming singled with classmate Carly Thomas scoring on an error on the play, before sophomore Kailee Powell cut the lead to 4-2 on an RBI groundout in the fourth.
SU pushed across an insurance run on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth for the 5-2 lead as the Illini could not rally in the final innings.
Senior Emily Oestreich (3-2) started and went 1.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits in the outing. Edwards entered in the second and gave up just one earned run on nine hits and two walks and struck out one in 4.1 frames of relief.
The Illini, who totaled five hits on the day, were led by Ruelius with a 2-for-2 effort with a run.
Next Up
The Illini will have a 12-day break before traveling to Los Angeles, Calif., for their final nonconference tournament of the season at the LMU Tournament, hosted by Loyola Marymount on March 15-17 at Smith Field.
