Saturday Heat Sheets
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Senior Devin Quinn led the Illini on day one of the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by the University of Michigan, advancing to tomorrow's finals in both the 60m and 200m with the top qualifying time in both events. Junior Jesse Reiser earned the fourth qualifying spot in the Mile to advance to the Saturday afternoon final. In the 800m, senior Denis O'Callaghan also advanced to the final with a fifth-place finish.Â
"Devin was great today," said head coach Mike Turk. "He is an experienced, elite athlete. He's progressed well and is having an outstanding senior season. He is confident and executing well."Â
Quinn started the afternoon by posting the top qualifying time in the 60m dash, recording a 6.65 finish to advance to the finals. The finish also ties a facility record at the new Michigan Indoor Track. Quinn would turn in another strong performance later in the afternoon in the 200m, posting the top qualifying time in the field with a 20.86 finish. The 200m finish time set a facility record in the event.Â
Jesse Reiser ran a time of 4:04.42 to advance to the final in the men's Mile. Reiser finished second in his heat, and placed fourth in prelims with his time being the fastest of a non-heat winner. His time was the second fastest among athletes competing in the event.
"I'm so happy to have Jesse back after sitting out last year," Turk said. "He's a great competitor, he's coachable and striving to improve at a high level. I'm really happy for the opportunity he has tomorrow in the final."Â
In the 800m, Denis O'Callaghan also booked his trip to a Saturday event final appearance with a 1:50.33 finish in today's prelims. The finish was a new PR for O'Callaghan in the event. Similar to Reiser in the Mile, O'Callaghan's 800m finish was the fastest of any non-heat winner and the second fastest among athletes competing in the event.Â
"After the DMR last week, Denny really impressed us with his 800, and we took a wild card and put him in this 800," Turk said. "Here, we thought he'd have a chance to make a final, rather than just running everybody in the mile. Fortunately, Denny ran just a marvelous race. Very smart, great, tactical, and he was fresh. He finished perfectly and made it through to that final, and that's what Big Ten meets are all about."Â
Senior Konrad Eiring also finished in the top-10 in the 800m prelims with a time of 1:51.44. In field events, junior Noah Adams set a new PR in the high jump with a mark of 2.03m.Â
Competition resumes tomorrow at Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor at 10 a.m. CT.Â
