CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Fighting Illini swimming and diving team will jump back in the pool this week for the Big Ten Championships, held in Bloomington, Indiana. The four-day event, hosted by the University of Indiana, is set to begin on Wednesday, February 20, and will conclude on Saturday, February 23. The Illini finished 12th at the event a year ago.
The Orange and Blue will see competition from five teams that are currently ranked in the top-25 nationally (according to the CSCAA poll) including, No. 2 Michigan, No. 14 Indiana, No. 16 Wisconsin, No. 18 Minnesota and No. 22 Ohio State. Although the Illini didn't compete against any of those teams in the regular season, the team will also face off against familiar foes Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern and Nebraska.
The four-day meet will begin with relay events on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. On Thursday through Saturday, the teams will swim a preliminary session in the morning at 10 a.m. with the championship session to follow at 5:30 p.m.
Illinois accumulated a point total of 187 a year ago in Columbus, Ohio, to place 12th at the event. The Illini had a number of highlights in the pool, including Aby Olson swimming the third-fastest 50 backstroke in program history, as well as NCAA B Cut times in the 200 individual medley from both Michelle McCord and Samantha Stratford.
Diver Ling Kuhn came away with one of the best performances in Illinois diving history a year ago, becoming the first Illini diver to score on all three events at the Big Ten Championships. Kuhn also secured a school-record performance during the preliminary round of platform diving, finishing with a 287.80.
