Fresh Faces: Get to Know Mia Takekawa

Mia Takekawa is a freshman from Sacramento, California, majoring in Engineering. She is a four-time Level 10 Junior Olympic National qualifier in addition to a decorated club gymnastics career.

Why did you choose Illinois?

I felt so comfortable with the atmosphere of the team, and the engineering program here is one of the best in the nation. Plus I wanted to live in the snow!

What are you looking forward to most about college gymnastics?

I can't wait to travel with the team and break records together!

When you were five years old, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a dolphin trainer at SeaWorld!

When did you first get into gymnastics?

I started in the mommy and me classes when I was 2.

Who has taught you the most about gymnastics?

My club coach, Rhonda, and my teammates. Rhonda taught me how to be mentally strong, and my teammates taught me to have fun and enjoy every minute of this sport.

Who has been the most influential person in your life?

I have looked up to my sister, Hannah, for as long as I can remember. She is kind, smart, hardworking, and has been the biggest influence on my life.
