Lovie Smith Press Conference Quotes

Opening Statement…
"It's a lot better talking after a win. A lot of good things happened this weekend, and I'm really pumped up for the players, our team, and everybody who has been supportive of us building our program. It takes a signature win like that, and on the other side, of course, we feel like we have been getting better. It's one thing to be getting better, but to be able to find a way to get a big win and to finish up the right way in the fourth quarter. So many guys stepped up to the plate. Of course, James McCourt kicking the field goal, but Devon Witherspoon, getting the guy down, to taking the ball away, which should lead me right into Jake Hansen. He's got a couple awards, Big Ten Player of the Week, Walter Camp Player of the Week, he just played outstanding football throughout, and to take the ball away seven times says an awful lot but that's how he's played and how he's been throughout the season. The same goes for Dele Harding, both of those guys have been really solid giving us linebacker play. Staying on the defensive side, Nate Hobbs played his best game and he had a chance to make a lot of plays on the ball but his tackling was really good, and, of course, upfront played really good. Going into that game, of course, we had given up a lot of points and it was a big challenge for our offense, and they really stepped up to the plate. Dre Brown running the football, Reggie Corbin, our offensive line. We had a few injuries, of course, Ricky Smalling going down, but that gave some other players an opportunity. When you're just hanging in there, you will eventually get an opportunity to play. Casey Washington, of course, is one of those guys. But a lot of good things happened, and that's good for that last game, but then you move on quickly. And last year homecoming we were embarrassed by Purdue, 46-7 or something like that. They played well, we didn't, so it's a chance to redeem yourself. It's one thing to get one win, but it's important to stack wins."

On how WR Donny Navarro has impressed him…
"Well I think just overall, not just the last month, Donny has had to earn it the hard way. Coming in without scholarship and just making people take notice. But if you continue to do things right you'll get an opportunity, and when you get your opportunity you need to step up to the plate and perform, and that's exactly what he did. Big play he had, you could only imagine the feelings he had, but he will continue to do that."

On the run defense vs. Wisconsin…
"Sometimes when you struggle you give up a couple big plays and it looks worse than it is. To start off, that's something we didn't do. We only gave up four explosive plays against Wisconsin, and that number has been up there quite a bit. If you eliminate that, most of the time guys have been in our gap playing hard, you can't miss tackles, and we didn't miss many tackles. And when we did miss tackles this game, we had multiple guys there. I don't know exactly all the reasons why, but guys have been practicing hard every week and if you just keep pounding the rock then the results will eventually come."

On the late play of QB Brandon Peters…
"You can make the case that Brandon has played his best ball, and you want that. You have to finish, we talk about finishing strong and at the quarterback position, when you're behind you're gonna run the football and make great throws. Of course, stepping out of the way of the rush and hitting Josh Imatorbhebhe on that one, but we have seen that from him quite a few times. He played great football. And a week ago, we were talking about how it was tough to not have your starting quarterback out there, and when we got him back this week it gave the team a boost."

On how the win vs. Wisconsin validates the "We Will Win" mantra…
"Yeah, this game was big, it really was. But, we haven't changed that. We've worked hard behind the scenes to win every football game. We have come up short in a few, but progress has been made. This confirms it to a lot of people who don't know what we are doing each day. We are on the right track, we are going to win a lot of games around here. That was one, and we need to win a second one this week."
