CHICAGO - The Fighting Illini women's cross country team raced to fourth place at the Loyola Lake Front Invitational Saturday afternoon. Freshman Madison Marasco led the way for the Illini, placing in the top-10 with a seventh-place finish, clocking a new season-best time of 17:00.70.
"The women were fantastic once again," said head coach Sarah Haveman. "They are a true team and together they are executing races very well. They put themselves in a position to be successful today and we are very proud about where we finished."
Illinois tallied a team score of 110 in their fourth-place finish in the 33 team field. This is the team's third top-five finish of the season, after placing second at both the EIU Walt Crawford Open and the Commodore Classic.
All Illini runners set new season-best times on Saturday. Three Illini finished in the top-20 overall. Along with Marasco, sophomore Allison McGrath placed 18th, completing the 5K 17:30.29. Sophomore Rebecca Craddock came in right behind McGrath, finishing 19th with a time of 17:30.35. Freshman Emma Milburn turned in her third consecutive top-50 performance, placing 37th with a time of 17:54.20. Rounding out the Illini's top-five finishers was sophomore Nicki Cast, who finished the race in 17:57.68, good for 42nd overall.
Up next, the Illini will travel to the Bradley Pink Classic in Peoria, Ill. along with the men's team on Friday, October 12. The women's meet will begin at 3:15 p.m. CT.
