CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Head women's tennis coach, Evan Clark, announced the addition of Associate Head Coach German Dalmagro (pronounced Her-mahn Dal-mahg-ro) to his staff. Dalmagro joins the Orange and Blue after spending the last five years in the same position at Nebraska.
"We are beyond thrilled to welcome German and his family to Champaign and to the University of Illinois," head coach Evan Clark said. "We feel very fortunate to be able to land such a quality individual and coach in German."
During his time in Lincoln, Dalmagro helped the Cornhuskers earn a top-60 national rankings in each of his five seasons, including as high as No. 21 this past season. The Cornhuskers also excelled academically during Dalmagro's tenure, as the team finished with the top GPA amongst all Nebraska sports in both 2014 and 2018.
"German brings a wealth of experience to our program and I know he will have an immediate positive impact on our student athletes," said Clark. "Unquestionably, German will be a great head coach one day but for the time being we are so excited for him to use his talents to help us continue to elevate our program here at the University of Illinois."
Prior to joining the Nebraska staff, Dalamagro was a member of the Kansas women's tennis coaching staff, spending six seasons with the Jayhawks from 2006 through 2013. During that time, Dalmagro saw the program earn seven All-Big 12 singles and doubles honors, as well as reach the Elite 8 in doubles at the All-American Championships.
Dalmagro was an assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs at the University of West Florida prior to joining the KU staff. During his year with UWF, both teams reached the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.
Dalmagro also had a successful playing career at UWF and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Dalmagro helped lead the Argonauts to back-to-back NCAA Division II Championships in 2004 and 2005, and was part of the 2005 Gulf South Conference Champion team and 2004 Gulf South runner-up squad. Dalmagro's career was highlighted by All-America honors in 2004 (doubles), 2003 (singles and doubles) and 2002 (singles and doubles). Dalmagro was ranked nationally as high as No. 3 in doubles and No. 11 in singles.
"First of all I would like to thank Evan Clark and the Illinois Athletic Department for this opportunity to coach at such a great institution," said Dalmagro. "I am excited to become part of this program and to help the student-athletes achieve their potential and enhance their experience. I can't wait to get started on this journey coaching alongside Evan and the outstanding young athletes."
"I would also like to thank Scott Jacobson and the University of Nebraska for making my family and I feel a part of the Husker family these past 5 years, and all the past and present student-athletes I had the privilege to coach and mentor. My wife, Karly and our son, Enzo are looking forward to being a part of the Champaign Community and the University of Illinois."
