Two Illini alums will be advancing to the U.S. Open following Monday's sectional qualifying rounds. Recent graduate
Dylan Meyer will join fellow alum Steve Stricker in the field at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, June 11-17.
Competing at Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ohio, Meyer posted rounds of 68-68 - 136 (-4) to earn runner-up honors and become one of the five players to advance to the U.S. Open.
Stricker shot 68-65 - 133 for a 10-under par finish at Ridgeway Country Club/Colonial Country Club in Memphis, Tennessee to also tie for second in the field. He was one of 11 players to advance out of Memphis. Stricker finished play strongly as he carded seven birdies in a span of nine holes during his second round to climb the leaderboard and punch his ticket to the U.S. Open.
The first round of the U.S. Open will begin at 5:45 a.m. CT on Thursday, June 14, with the second round to begin at the same time on Friday, June 15. The third and fourth rounds will be played June 16 and June 17.
Several Illini in the pros saw success this past weekend as well as both Scott Langley and Brian Campbell earned top-five finishes at the Web.com Tour's Rex Hospital Open. Langley tied for second at the event with a total score 17-under par, while Campbell was tied for fourth just one stroke back (-16).
On the European Tour, Thomas Pieters tied for 14th at the Italian Open, shooting 15-under par through four rounds of play. Thomas Detry finished 10-under par a the tournament to tie for 36th individually.
Coming up, several Illini will be back out on the course next weekend. Recent graduate Nick Hardy will join Scott Langley, Luke Guthrie and Brian Campbell in the field at the Rust-Oleum Championship as he makes his professional debut close to home. The tournament is set for June 7-10 in Ivanhoe, Illinois.
D.A. Points and Steve Stricker are set to appear in the field at the PGA TOUR's FedEx St. Jude Classic this weekend, which will be held at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. Head Coach Mike Small earned an exemption into the PGA TOUR Champions' Principal Charity Classic, which runs June 8-10 in Des Moines, Iowa.
