Final Results
VERONA, Wis. - The 20th ranked Fighting Illini women's golf team narrowly missed a spot at the NCAA Championships as the team finished one spot away from qualifying. The Orange and Blue carded a three-day total of 866 (+2) to finish in seventh place, marking the best regional finish in program history.Â
"They gave it everything they had," head coach
Renee Slone said. "They poured everything they had into it and into each other and continued to bring a high level of energy each and every day. We just weren't quite clicking on all cylinders and that's really what you need if you're going to advance to the national championships."
The Illini were in the hunt for a qualifying spot all day long, as the team entered the round tied for sixth place with both Ohio State and Northwestern. UI shot a 289 (+1), while OSU and NU came away with rounds of 286 (-2) and 287 (-1), respectively. The six qualifying teams include Duke (-14), Virginia (-5), USC (-2), Arizona State (-1), Ohio State (-1) and Northwestern (E).Â
Grace Park led the way for the Illini, placing tied for 11th overall. The senior finished the tournament strong with a final round of 69 (-3) to bring her three-day total to 215 (-1).
Tristyn Nowlin and
Chayanid Prapassarangkul weren't far behind, tying for 30th at 218 (+2). Nowlin carded rounds of 72-73-73, while Prapassarangkul shot a first round of 74 (+2), a second round of 69 (-3) and a final round of 75 (+3).Â
Bing Singhsumalee posted a 74 (+2) on Wednesday to bring her total to 219 (+3) and tie for 37th. Also tying for 37th was
Dana Gattone, who came away with rounds of 75-71-73.Â
"The team accomplished quite a bit this season," Slone added. "They have really laid a foundation for us to build on for years and years to come."
