CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – 12 Illinois men's track and field athletes will compete at NCAA West Prelims next week in Sacramento, California after the NCAA announced qualifiers for each event on Thursday. The 12 Illini combine for 16 entries across 12 events. Competition begins Thursday, May 24 and continues through Saturday, May 26.
Held at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State, NCAA West Prelims will host the first round and quarterfinal round for sprints, hurdles and middle distance events. Distance and field events will be contesting semifinals. All three days of action can be streamed on FloTrack with a subscription to the platform.
Highlighting the list of qualifiers are a trio of Illini who rank in the top-10 in their respective events. All-Americans David Kendziera (110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 4x400m relay) and 2018 Big Ten Field Athlete of the Championships Jonathan Wells (high jump, long jump, 110m hurdles) will each contest three events in their pursuit of a return trip to Eugene, Oregon, while junior Devin Quinn (100m, 200m, 4x100m relay) is seeking to advance to his first NCAA Finals.
Also returning to NCAA Prelims will be seniors Mo Maat (100m, 4x100m relay), Cole Henderson (4x100m relay) and Kenneth Allen (4x400m relay) and junior Konrad Eiring (4x400m relay). Maat and Henderson were both 2015 All-Americans as members of the 4x100m relay. An indoor All-American in the 4x400m relay in 2015, Allen is making his second trip to Prelims as part of the relay. Eiring will make his first appearance at Prelims on the 4x400m relay after running the 800m last year.
In addition to the five returnees, six other Illini will be making their NCAA Prelims debuts. In field events, Matsen Dziedzic carries his 207'8" (63.31m) personal record at Big Tens in the hammer throw, while Jacob LaRocca and Cooper Jazo both qualified in the pole vault. Sprinters Joe Haight (400m, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay) and Jason Shannon (100m, 4x100m relay) join distance runner Dan Lathrop (5K) and 4x400m relay runner Parker Deloye in rounding out the Prelims newcomers.
