CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Fighting Illini football team wrapped-up Spring Ball on Saturday with public scrimmage on a cold, but sunny day at Memorial Stadium.
Team Grange (first string) had its way with Team Butkus (second string), 45-10, in an approximately 80-play scrimmage that featured several big plays. New offensive coordinator Rod Smith dialed up long touchdown runs from Ra'Von Bonner (75 yards) and Reggie Corbin twice (60 yards and 57-yards), as well as a 71-yard TD pass from Cam Thomas to Caleb Reams to name a few. Reams also caught another 25-yard TD strike from back-up quarterback Cam Miller for Team Butkus' only touchdown.
"We want to be a fast-break offense," head coach Lovie Smith told reporters after the scrimmage. "We have some offensive guys that can make you miss in the open field."
Following the scrimmage, Illini fans were able to come down to the turf at Memorial Stadium and get autographs and photos with Coach Smith and the players. Today marked the final practice of the spring for the Fighting Illini, who will now shift back to offseason workout mode until the semester ends in may.
Illinois is slated to open training camp in early August and will begin the 2018 regular season Sept. 1 when Kent State comes to Memorial Stadium. Season tickets are on sale now for as low as $99.
