Spillane Named Perfect Game Midseason Player of the Year

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois first baseman Bren Spillane was named Perfect Game/Rawlings Midseason Player of the Year, Perfect Game announced Wednesday. Spillane is also one of 10 named Midseason First Team All-Americans by Perfect Game.

Spillane adds Midseason Player of the Year to his long list of accolades won in the first half of the season. The junior from Wheeling, Illinois, was the first player in Big Ten history to win three straight Big Ten Player of the Week honors and the first Illini ever to win national player of the week honors on two occasions.

Spillane is among the national leaders in nearly every statistical category. He leads the nation in slugging percentage (1.149) and OPS (1.728), is tied for national lead in homers (14), ranks second in batting average (.494), second in on-base percentage (.579) and sixth in RBIs (38), one RBI away from first.

Illinois is 17-7 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten. The Illini are back in action this weekend during a three-game series at Maryland.
