CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Senior swimmer Gabriele Serniute has been selected to compete at the 2018 USA Winter Swimming National Championships, held in Greensboro, N.C., Nov. 28 - Dec. 1. The Vilnius, Lithuania, native is set to compete in the preliminary round of the 100 breaststroke on Friday and will also take part in time trials on both Thursday and Saturday.
"Gabby has done a great job of being more consistent in her training this fall," assistant coach Elliott McGill said. "Her performances at meets have really been improved because of that, which has led her to this opportunity."
Serniute currently holds the team's top time in the 100 breaststroke after posting a personal-best 1:02.40 at the House of Champions Invitational earlier this month. The time ranks as the fourth fastest in program history and also places her fourth on Illinois' fastest individuals list for the event.
The meet will be swum in long course meters and will feature some high-profile American swimmers, including Olympic gold medalists, Katie Ledecky and Simone Manuel. The top 24 swimmers from each event will advance to the A, B or C finals.
"This is a great opportunity for Gabby to represent the University of Illinois. It's a nice capstone to her four-year career here and it shows we are developing elite level athletes in our program."
Friday's prelim races can be streamed on usaswimming.org. A full schedule of TV and webcast streaming options for the championships can be found here.
