Big Ten Release
ROSEMONT Ill. – Fighting Illini senior Bing Singhsumalee was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week, as announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon. The conference honor marks a career first for the Naperville, Ill. native.
Singhsumalee helped the Illini conclude a successful fall campaign with their third win at the Trinity Forest Invitational with 872 (+8). Their team total was 9 strokes ahead of SEC opponent, Tennessee, who finished runner-up. 2018 NCAA Championship qualifier, No. 25 Oregon State, rounded out the top-three with a 25-over par total.
Coming off a successful performance at the Cardinal Cup, Singhsumalee finished her final fall season with another runner-up finish, posting a 215 (-1). The Naperville, Ill. native's birdie total was third-overall, posting 10 birdies including four in the second round. She also recorded 46 holes at or below par, including an impressive second round score of 69 (-3). Singhsumalee's back-to-back top-three finishes the past two tournaments is a career first.
This honor marks back-to-back awards for the Illini, as junior Tristyn Nowlin earned the award last week. The last time that the Orange and Blue earned consecutive honors was April 2005 when Illinois alumni Megan Godfrey and Kristine Cook received this weekly honor on April 7, 2005 and April 14, 2005 respectively.
Illinois will return to Champaign for some offseason work before opening the spring season in February. The Orange and Blue will travel to the Sunshine State from Feb. 3-5 for the UCF Challenge at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando Fla. (Feb. 3-5).
