Last Time Out
Despite the windy conditions, the Illini women's golf team earned their second tournament title this season at the Cardinal Cup held at the University of Louisville Golf Club (par 72, 6,303 yards) in Simpsonville, Ky. In their fourth consecutive year at the event, the Orange and Blue posted a three-round total of 863 (-1). Their 5-under par 283 in the third-round tied the ninth lowest team round in program history.
The Orange and Blue were led by the 1-2 punch of junior Nowlin and senior Singhsumalee. Behind a career-best finish, Nowlin captured the individual title for her first career victory. Nowlin was the only player in the tournament to finish with a total below par (6-under par 210). This ties her for the third lowest 54-hole tournament total in program history. Singhsumalee tied for runner-up with a 216 (E), marking another career-best finish for the Illini. Both Nowlin and Singhsumalee posted 12 birdies each, tying for the top spot with Martina Flori of Ole Miss.
Freshman duo Sukaree and Wang joined Nowlin and Singhsumalee among the top 15 after two days of competition. A consistent force for the Illini, Sukaree tied for eighth with a 220 (+4). An impressive newcomer for the Orange and Blue, Wang recorded a 71 (-1) in the opening and final rounds to finish 13th overall with a 222 (+6). Rounding out the fivesome was sophomore Morallos, who tied for 31st with a 231 (+15).
Playing as individuals, freshmen Hallinan and Nay tied for 56th and 71st, respectively. Hallinan posted a 238 (+22), while Nay finished with a 246 (+30).
The Venue
The Trinity Forest Invitational will be held at Dallas' Trinity Forest Golf Club, the home of the PGA TOUR's AT&T Byron Nelson Championship. The venue will also annually host the NCAA invitational tournament and additional high-profile professional and amateur events.
The club resembles many of the great old courses of the Northeast and Great Britain, featuring a links style course on a rolling meadow with tall native grasses and dramatic bunkering and green complexes.
The team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw (Coore & Crenshaw, Inc.) designed both the championship golf course, the short course, and the nine-hole "Horse Course." The design honors classic golf courses with traditional, strategic golf, and great artistry as the guiding philosophy.
