Busy Weekend on Tap for Illini Swim and Dive
January 24, 2018 | Swimming & Diving
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – After almost three months away from the ARC Pool, the Fighting Illini swimming and diving team gets set for a busy weekend at home, as UI will host both the Illinois Quad Duals and the Illinois Tri Meet. The quad duals are set to begin on Friday, January 26, at 4 p.m. CT, while the tri meet will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
"We are excited to be able to finish out the regular season at home," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "We have been on the road for 19 of the last 28 days and that takes a toll. Being familiar with the pool should help us execute in our events. We are looking forward to having a home crowd and competing strong."
Illinois Quad Duals
Friday's meet will feature competition from four schools, including Olivet Nazarene, Lincoln College, Youngstown State and Eastern Illinois.
The meet will have a Hawaiian/tropical theme, as fans will be given sunglasses and leis. Free pizza will also be provided.
Illinois Tri-Meet
The Illini will again face competition from Olivet Nazarene and Youngstown State, in addition to Butler on Saturday.
Prior to the meet, seven senior swimmers and divers will be recognized as part of Senior Day, including Ashley Aegerter, Nelly Casas, Raquel Corniuk, Adelaide Curry, Kaitlyn Joyce, Sascha Meyers and Samantha Stratford. Saturday's meet also marks the annual Splash Bash celebration, as fans will be able to enjoy Buffalo Wild Wings, cotton candy and will also have the opportunity to win signed posters, water bottles, rally towels, bubbles and fidget spinners.
"It is always hard and gratifying to see the seniors reaching the end of their collegiate careers," Novitsky added. "We are looking for the seniors to keep stepping up and leading the team. We need them to keep being the role models that you finish what you start with the same effort and motivation."
Next Up
Following this weekend's meets, the Illini divers will travel to Chicago for the UIC Diving Invitational on February 3, at 11 a.m. CT. The team will then get set for the Big Ten Championships, held in Columbus, Ohio, from February 14-17.
