Quinn's 60m Dash Highlights Mark Colligan Memorial for Illini MTrack

Five Illini record runner-up finishes

LINCOLN, Neb. – Fighting Illini junior Devin Quinn bolted his way to the third-fastest 60m dash time in school history, a winning time of 6.69, to lead the Illinois men's track and field team at the Mark Colligan Memorial on Saturday. Quinn's 60m event title was joined by six runner-up finishes and five personal-best performances at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

"We had some really good performances, and there were some sub-par performances," said Turk following the meet. "The purpose of having this meet on the schedule is that it gives us an up-hill battle early in the season. We've faced this every time we come here. It's our first time each year running on a banked track, especially this year with some many kids that have never run on a track like this before. The other thing is that we have limits on how many people we travel. Nebraska has all their kids out there and they overwhelm you with bodies, and I kind of like that because it creates some duress for our team and puts some pressure on them that helps them learn and grow from that. The great thing is watching them learn how to handle adversity and not let them affect their performances. Devin Quinn is a perfect example of this. I've seen Devin come and get eaten up in a meet like this, and today he was really good. It's part of the growing process."

Entering the day tied for fourth on the all-time 60m list with a 7.73 performance from Big Ten Championships last season, Quinn became only the third Illini to run a sub-6.70 time in the event. Andrew Riley holds the school record of 6.57, set in 2012, while Dominique Worsley sits in second with a time of 6.62 that was tops in program history prior to Riley.

Marking a 0.04 improvement, Quinn's 6.69 time ranks second in the Big Ten and top-15 nationally.

"We knew he was ready to do some special things [this year,"] said Turk. "We've been seeing that all fall. I think you started to see him make the transition to becoming one of the upper-level guys in the Big Ten last year. He performed extremely outdoors last year, and then he's had a good fall training. I think it's just a matter of him being extremely coachable and working on what we're trying to get him to do. He's worked hard on his acceleration, and his max speed has always been pretty good. Now those two things are starting to come together, and that's when the faster times will really come."

Quinn's day was just getting started when he crossed the finish line of the 60m dash final, as the Punta Gorda, Florida sprinter continued to put his speed on display in the 200m.

Making his season debut in the 200m, Quinn circled the track in just 21.18, good for a runner-up finish behind Houston's Elijah Hall (20.76) who set the fourth-fastest time nationally to beat the Illini junior. Quinn was joined in the top-five by Illini sophomore Josh Eiker who timed 21.36, 0.06 off his personal-best, to take fourth place. The two times put up by the Illini sprinters rank second and fourth, respectively, in the Big Ten conference.

In addition to Quinn's success, five other Illini earned runner-up finishes for the team on Saturday across a variety of disciplines. Of the five second-place finishes, three marked a personal-best performance.

Illinois' distance runners took home three of the five runner-up placements, doing so in the 600m, 800m and 3,000m races. In the two middle distance events, junior Konrad Eiring clocked a 1:20.17 personal-best to take second in the 600m and senior Garrett Lee teamed up with junior Denis O'Callaghan to finish second and third in the mile. Redshirt sophomore Zach Dale rounded out the day for the Illini with a new personal record in the 3,000m run, timing 8:23.87.

The other two runner-up finishes came from redshirt senior David Kendziera in the 60m hurdles and senior Matsen Dziedzic in the weight throw. Kendziera timed 7.86 in the hurdle final, a mere 0.01 seconds behind Antoine Lloyd (7.85), while Dziedzic twice surpassed 63 feet to finish second with a best mark of 63'9.5" (19.44) that was just an inch-and-a-half off his personal-record.

A pair of field event personal-records rounded out the top performances of competition for the Orange and Blue, as sophomore Cooper Jazo and Mo Maat reached new career marks in field events.

Pole vaulter Cooper Jazo reached new heights with a personal-record 16'2" (4.93m) clearance on his first attempt to place third behind a pair of top-40 ranked pole vaulters Tyler Loontjer (Nebraska) and Kyle Rogers (Kansas).

The height improves upon a 16'1.25" (4.91m) season-best from last year's Orange and Blue Open for Jazo. Amongst Big Ten competition, the mark ranks as the eighth-best so far in the conference.

In the long jump, senior Mo Maat continued to compile a strong start to his final collegiate season. After setting a personal-best leap of 23'5.25" in the event last weekend, Maat twice surpassed the mark on Saturday. On his third attempt of competition, Maat measured  23'7.25" (7.19m), good for fourth place.

"Mo is really close to doing some things that are next-level," said Turk. "He's really starting to figure some things out in the long jump. His best jump of the day, he didn't execute his run quite right. He was well behind the board when he took off. Those are the kind of things that will get fixed in the future, and the bigger jumps will come out."

Up next, the Fighting Illini return to the UI Armory to host the Illini Classic next Saturday, January 27. A four-team meet that includes Louisville, Eastern Illinois and Illinois State will begin at 10 a.m. Fans attending the meet can receive a 'Hail to the Orange' rally towel, while young Illini fans can take part in 'Kids Take Over the Armory' day that will feature 60m and 200m races.
