Illinois will host the prestigious Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge for the first time in its history this weekend, welcoming in No. 3 Penn State, No. 4 Stanford and Colorado to Huff Hall on September 1-2.
Illinois holds a 1-5 all-time record in the Challenge, falling to UCLA (0-3) and Stanford (2-3) in the inuagural event in 2014, before spliting with Colorado (W, 3-0) and Stanford (L, 1-3) in 2015 and dropping both matches last season in five-set thrillers to the Buffs and Cardinals.
ILLINOIS VS. THE FIELD
The Illinois volleyball team is set to face a pair of familiar opponents this weekend as No. 4 Stanford and Colorado make appearances on the Illini schedule for the fourth-straight season.
The Illini and the Cardinal will meet in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge for the fourth-consecutive year, while UI has faced the Buffs in back-to-back Challenges and in the Creighton Classic in 2014.
The Illini are 0-8 all-time against Stanford, with the Cardinal in the top 10 in the polls in all seven matchups since the AVCA rankings began. In last season's meeting, the Illini pushed the No. 9 Cardinal to the brink, before falling 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 12-25, 25-20, 12-15) in a five-set thriller. Junior Ali Bastianelli set a program record with 14 block assists in the match.
The Orange and Blue lead the all-time series with Colorado, 4-3, and had won three-straight against the Buffs until last season's intense fifth-set hearbreaker (17-25, 25-18, 15-25, 25-18, 17-19).
