WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Fighting Illini men's golf closed the second round of play at the NCAA West Lafayette Regional on Tuesday, finishing 8-over par in sixth place. New Mexico (-6) leads the regional field, followed by UNLV (-3). Florida (+3), Auburn (+3) and Purdue (+3) are also among the top five teams after two rounds of play.  Junior Nick Hardy (-1) leads the Orange and Blue as he is tied for 10th individually.
"We put ourselves in a position where we have our work cut out for us tomorrow," head coach Mike Small said. "We have to play some more confident and assertive golf. We were playing from a point of weakness today, which was unacceptable. I'm excited for the challenge tomorrow; we're going to have to go out early and post a number. We're in control of that; we need to control the environment, today it controlled us."
Hardy maintained his consistent play, shooting even par on Tuesday. He used two late birdies to negate two bogeys on the front nine. Sophomore Edoardo Lipparelli joins Hardy among the top 25 individuals as he is tied for 23rd. Lipparelli closed the second round at 7-over par for a total score 3-over par.
Freshman Giovanni Tadiotto is just one stroke back from Lipparelli as he is 4-over par in a tie for 26th. Tadiotto started the day on a high note, making eagle on the first hole. He closed the second round with a score 2-over par, negating two late bogeys with two birdies on the back nine.
Junior Dylan Meyer also got off to a hot start on Tuesday, tallying four birdies on the front nine to make the turn at 4-under par. He recorded three consecutive bogeys on the back nine, however, and closed the day at 2-over par. He is 5-over par and tied for 32nd through two rounds of play.
Freshman Michael Feagles shot 4-over par Tuesday for a total tally 12-over par. He is tied for 66th overall.
The Illini will hit the course at 6:50 a.m. CT for tomorrow's final round of play. The low five teams and low individual not on a qualifying team after tomorrow's round will advance to compete at the NCAA Championship at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois, May 26-31. Â
