LINCOLN, Neb. – The No. 25 Illinois softball team dropped its first game since April 2 as Nebraska snapped the Illini's 10-game win streak in a 14-0, five-inning setback in the series finale on Sunday (April 23) at Bowlin Stadium.
The Illini - who took the series with two wins earlier in the weekend - fall to 34-11 and 12-3 in the Big Ten Conference, while the Huskers improve to 20-25 and 9-8 in the league.
"This was a tough loss today, but Nebraska is a good team with a strong tradition," said head coach Tyra Perry. "Rhonda [Revelle, Nebraska head coach] and her staff do an excellent job of creating a top notch softball atmosphere. We are pleased to leave with two wins to take the series."
The Huskers opened the scoring in the second inning, batting around the lineup en route to six runs on four hits and a pair of bases-loaded walks.
Nebraska plated another two runs in the third, before putting up another six runs – all unearned – in the fourth for the 14-0 final.
Sophomore Taylor Edwards (14-2) took the loss after giving up four earned runs on one hit and three walks in an inning of action. Senior Breanna Wonderly (1.1 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 4 BB, 1 K), freshman Akilah Mouzon (1.1 IP, 4 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 BB) and junior Kate Giddens (0.1 IP, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 H) also saw action in the circle in relief duty.
The Illini totaled three hits and an error, with sophomore Kiana Sherlund knocking her 10th double of the season. Juniors Annie Fleming and Leigh Farina also added hits on the day.
No. 25 Illinois next opens a four-game homestand at Eichelberger Field, starting with the Illini hosting Big Ten foe Wisconsin for a three-game series on April 28-30. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. CT on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday.
