SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Fighting Illini men's golf opened play at the Lone Star Invitational on Monday, shooting 27-under par to lead the field through two rounds of play. Three Illini are currently among the top-15 on the leaderboard, led by freshman Michael Feagles and junior Dylan Meyer who are among the top three individuals. Texas El Paso (-19) and UTSA (-19) round out the top three teams on the leaderboard.Â
Feagles was on fire right from the start on Monday, opening the tournament with four birdies on the front nine, including consecutive birdies on the seventh and eighth holes. Feagles matched his career-low with a 6-under par 66 in the opening round, and carried that momentum into his second round of the day. The freshman posted three-straight birdies in his first four holes of the second round, and again made the turn at 4-under par. He added two more birdies on the back nine for a second-round tally 5-under par. Feagles (-11) is just one shot back from tournament leader Max McGreevy (Oklahoma). Â
Junior Dylan Meyer joins Feagles at the top of the leaderboard as he is currently tied for third individually with a total tally 9-under par. Meyer turned on the heat late in the first round as he carded five birdies on the back nine and closed the first round with an eagle to shoot 7-under par. Meyer added four more birdies in the second round of play, shooting 2-under par through the round.
After a 2-over par start to the day, junior Nick Hardy picked up steam in the second round of play with a birdie on his first hole. He continued on to post an eagle and a birdie on consecutive holes and start the second round at 4-under par. After making the turn, Hardy recorded four birdies on the back nine for a second-round score 6-under par. Hardy is currently 4-under par and tied for 12th.
Sophomore Edoardo Lipparelli is two shots back from Hardy as he is 2-under par through two rounds. Lipparelli birdied five of his first nine holes to start the day, and closed the first round with a 4-under par 68. He stayed at even par through the second round, but two late bogeys put him at 2-over par for the second round.
Freshman Bryan Baumgarten is in 69th individually with a two-round score 7-over par. Baumgarten shot 2-under par through his first nine holes, before closing the first round with a total tally 1-over par. Baumgarten shot 6-over for the second round of play.
Representing the Illini as an individual, Freshman Giovanni Tadiotto is tied for 26th individually with a two-round tally 1-under par. Tadiotto posted four first-round birdies and was even heading into the second round of the day. He picked up momentum in the second round, recording birdies on five of his first nine holes. He closed the day with a few late bogeys, however, but earned a second-round score of 1-under par.
The Illini will continue with the final round of play on Tuesday, teeing off from the first hole at 8:30 a.m. Located on the edge of Texas Hill Country, Briggs Ranch Golf Club boasts a Par 72, 7,247-yard course.
The No. 6-ranked Illini join No. 11 Oklahoma, No. 49 New Mexico, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Little Rock, Louisiana-Lafayette, McNeese State, Mississippi State, New Mexico State, Rice, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas State, UTEP and host UTSA among the Lone Star Invitational field.
