Karras Caps Rookie Season as Super Bowl Champion

Illini Super Bowl History | Illini in the NFL

New England Patriots rookie and former Fighting Illini offensive guard Ted Karras finished off his first NFL season as a Super Bowl Champion, helping the Patriots to a 34-28 overtime victory of the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI Sunday in Houston.

A sixth-round pick by the Patriots in the 2016 NFL Draft, Karras saw action on field goal and PAT protection as the Patriots came from 25 points down to win their fifth Super Bowl title.

Karras played in all 19 games during his rookie season (16 regular season games and three playoff games) and made one start at guard, the 2016 season-opener. He took 108 snaps on the offensive line and 81 snaps on special teams during the regular season and earned Patriots Practice Player of the Week honors three times. During the playoffs, he was on the field for 18 plays in three games, 17 on special teams and one on offense.

Karras is the 24th former Illini to win a Super Bowl and it marked the 30th time an Illinois alumnus ended a season on the field as a Super Bowl Champion.
