Illini Fall to Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. – The Illinois women's tennis team dropped a road match to Oklahoma on Sunday, 5-2. The Fighting Illini fall to 3-8 on the season, and Oklahoma improves to 7-2.
"We just came up a little bit short," said head coach Evan Clark.
Madie Baillon and Jaclyn Switkes won the No. 1 doubles match, 6-3, over Julie Byrne and Malene Stripp. Oklahoma would win the doubles point, though, as Serena Nash and Ann Selim defeated Grace Tapak and Jade Hilton at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, and Lily Miyazaki and Simran Sethi took down Louise Kwong and Daniela Pedraza Novak, 6-4.
"We certainly can't afford to play a loose doubles point and expect to win close matches," Clark said. "We dug ourselves too many holes that we couldn't quite get out of in both doubles and singles."
In singles, 22nd-ranked Miyazaki defeated Kwong, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Tapak fell to Byrne at the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-4. Illinois got on the board with Pedraza Novak's win at No. 4 singles over Nash, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. 109th-ranked Baillon won at the No. 2 position over Mimi Fotopoulos, 7-5, 6-4.
Stripp defeated Switkes, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), to clinch the match for Oklahoma at No. 3 singles. At the No. 6 spot, Selim won over Hilton, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) to make the final score 5-2.
"We will continue to work hard in practice and find ways in the future to win these close matches," Clark said.

The Illini will have a week off before traveling to Tallahassee, Florida, to face Florida State on Friday, March 10, at 2 p.m. CT.
