SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - At the conclusion of the first two rounds of play at the Cardinal Cup, the Fighting Illini find themselves in third place with an 11-over-par score. The Illini carded rounds of 288 (E) and 299 (+11) at the University of Louisville Golf Club (par 72, 6,250 yards) in Simpsonville, Kentucky.
"Overall, the team gave themselves a lot of opportunities for birdies and capitalized in the first round," coach Jenny Coluccio said. "In the second round, we had a few less opportunities coupled with fewer putts that went in the hole. While the scoring seemed quite different, the play wasn't too dissimilar between rounds."
Currently sitting in a tie for seventh place, freshman Ali Morallos finished the day with scores of 70 (-2) and 75 (+3). Junior Bing Singhsumalee posted scores of 72 (E) and 74 (+2) to tie for 10th place after the first day of play.
Tying for 19th, senior Jan Prapassarangkul carded rounds of 71 (-1) and 76 (+4), while sophomore Tristyn Nowlin posted scores of 75 (+3) and 74 (+2), sitting tied for 25th. Senior Dana Gattone shot identical rounds of 77 (+5) and is tied for 40th overall.
Competing as an individual, senior Grace Park posted a first round total of 73 (+1) before withdrawing from play.
Louisville leads the way with a 3-under-par score, followed by Kent State at +9. East Carolina and Virginia Tech round out the top five at +12.
"In order to put our best foot forward tomorrow, it will take continued focus on the team's energy and connection between each other, strong decision making and patience with their execution," Coluccio said. "We will continue to focus on what we can control, make a few strategic changes from the first day and enjoy another day in the sun and on the course."
