KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – At the end of the first day of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, the Fighting Illini sit alone in first place. The Orange and Blue posted team scores of 278 (-6) and 285 (+1), respectively, in the first two rounds from the Cherokee Country Club (Par 71, 5897 yards) in Knoxville, Tennessee.
"We had a lot of really great things going on," head coach Renee Slone said. "We saw different team members step up when they needed to, and what we saw was a great result."
Illinois is led by senior Stephanie Miller, who is currently tied for second overall with a 71 (E) in the first round, and a 67 (-4) in the second for a four-under-par overall. Sophomore Bing Singhsumalee and freshman Tristyn Nowlin are tied for 10th with +1, after each shooting a 67 (-4) in round one and a 76 (+5) in round two. Nowlin and Singhsumalee tied for the overall lead with Kent State's Pimnipa Panthong after round one with their -4 scores.
Freshman Swing Liu sits in a tie for 28th, carding a 78 (+7) in the first round and a 68 (-3) in the second round, good for a four-over-par effort. Junior Chayanid Prapassarangkul recorded a 73 (+2) in round one, and a 74 (+3) in the round two, scoring a +5 overall and tying for 35th.
The six-under-par score in the first round ties the program record for a lowest single-round, matching the Illini's second round mark at the 2012 Westbrook Spring Invitational.
"We'll treat tomorrow just like today," Slone said. "We will focus on our process, and be patient. As long as we do that, the results will take care of themselves."
The final round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship will tee off at 8 a.m. CT on Tuesday with a shotgun start.
