Eugene, Ore. – Fighting Illini Men's Golf shot a team score at even par on Saturday, May 28, to move into a tie for seventh overall after two rounds of play at the 2016 NCAA Men's Golf National Championships. Senior Charlie Danielson led Illinois (+10) with a second round tally 1-under par. Both Danielson and sophomore Dylan Meyer sit 1-over par for the tournament after two rounds.
"I thought we got better, we moved in the right direction," head coach Mike Small said. "The guys played the golf course better and got more familiar with it. I thought we competed well through a lull in the middle of the round also. Even par is a solid round. Yesterday we didn't play that much worse, we just didn't finish off the round. Today we made some birdies coming in."
As a team, both Illinois and Vanderbilt shot even on the day, marking the lowest team rounds of the morning wave. Only Alabama (-1) and Oregon (-3) shot better in the second round. Vanderbilt currently holds the tournament lead with a score 3-over par, while USC (+5) and Arkansas (+6) round out the top three. Individually, USC's Justin Suh sits atop the leaderboard with a total score 5-under par.
Danielson, tallied three birdies on Saturday, using back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight to negate two bogeys on the front nine. Meyer also tallied three birdies on the day, but shot even par for the round. The two are tied for 24th individually.
Senior Thomas Detry is currently 3-over par in total after finishing even in the second round. Detry birdied three holes on his front nine, but ran into some difficulty towards the end of the round making three consecutive bogeys. He closed the round on a high note, however, making birdie on his last hole to give the Illini a lift.
Sophomore Nick Hardy shot just 1-over par for the second round, tallying three birdies for the day. He is 5-over par in total for the Orange and Blue, and tied for 64th overall.
Freshman Edoardo Lipparelli shot 6-over par on Saturday for a total score 12-over par.
"We need to keep looking forward on the leaderboard and be ready to come out tomorrow and keep building on the momentum we established today," Small said. "I think we need to continue to drive it better. We did that today, but we can continue to improve there. When we keep learning about this golf course, more putts will start dropping."
The Orange and Blue will tee off at 9 a.m. CT on Sunday, May 29 for the third round of play. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat, and fans can follow @IlliniMGolf on Twitter for even more live updates. Following Sunday's round, the top 15 teams will advance to the fourth and final round of stroke play. The individual champion will be crowned at the conclusion of the fourth round, and the low eight teams will advance to match play.
