Eugene, Ore. – Fighting Illini men's golf will advance to the final round of stroke play at the 2016 NCAA Men's Golf Championship after a 9-over par third round score put them in a tie for ninth overall. The Illini currently sit 19-over par after three rounds of play. Once again, senior Charlie Danielson led the Illini as the veteran finished the day at even par. Danielson is currently 1-over par for the tournament. Danielson has now shot at or below par in 21 rounds this season, and he is currently tied for 13th individually.
Vanderbilt sits at the top of the leaderboard with a score 5-over par, while Texas (+7) and USC (+10) round out the top 3 teams. The Illini are tied with Oklahoma State, and sit just one stroke behind California, who holds the eighth spot on the leaderboard. Following tomorrow's final round of stroke play, the NCAA will crown the individual champion, and the low eight teams will advance to match play.
"Today was not the kind of push we were looking for in the third round," head coach Mike Small said. "This was a moving day and we didn't take advantage of that, however, the course has been winning, it looks like, and we're still very much in this. We have to make some key adjustments, of ways that we're playing this golf course and in ways that this course is asking us to be played. We need to stop making it so hard on ourselves. We had some unforced errors today that killed us; those unforced errors are something that we've kind of run into a little bit in the past. When we play well those unforced errors aren't there, but today they were."
Senior Thomas Detry and sophomore Dylan Meyer are currently 6-over par for the tournament, tied for 50th individually. Detry closed the third round with a total 3-over par, starting his day with a few consecutive bogeys. He used two birdies and an eagle to battle back to even par. The sixth hole gave him some trouble before the end of the round, as the senior shot even par through his final nine holes.
Meyer closed the day 5-over par for the Illini, carding back-to-back birdies on holes 14 and 15 early in the day.
Sophomore Nick Hardy closed the third round with a score 3-over par, currently sitting 8-over par for the tournament in a tie for 67th. Hardy used an early birdie to sit just 1-over par through his first nine holes, but consecutive bogeys on his back nine put him 2-over for the final stretch of the day.
Freshman Edoardo Lipparelli carded his best round of the tournament on Sunday, closing the day 3-over par. He started out at even par, before making consecutive bogeys at the turn. He tallied two birdies late in the round, closing his back nine just 1-over par.
The Orange and Blue will tee off at 2:20 p.m. CT on Monday, May 30 for the fourth and final round of stroke play. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat, and fans can follow @IlliniMGolf on Twitter for even more live updates. The Championship is being held at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon, which boasts a par 70, 7,014-yard course.
