Champaign, Ill. - Fighting Illini Men's Golf is set to close out regular season play at the Boilermaker Invitational over the weekend. Held at Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind., the 54-hole tournament will take place Saturday and Sunday, April 16-17.
"We're looking forward to going to Purdue after some time off," head coach Mike Small said. "We're looking forward to seeing some fellow Big Ten teams and getting reacquainted with the Purdue golf course. It's a great golf course that is demanding and is set up to be very challenging. I'm sure our guys are looking forward to getting back into the competitive mode and competing the next two weeks."
The home course of the Purdue Boilermakers, Kampen Course is a Par 72, 7,465-yard facility that has been rated one of the top collegiate courses in the nation.
"It's got some difficult holes and some penalizing holes," Small said of Kampen Course. We will need to play from a point of strength or they can get up and grab you. We're going to have to be prepared for a tough golf course."
The No. 2-ranked Illini will compete among a field of 15 teams including several Big Ten opponents. No. 31 Purdue, No. 43 Michigan State, No. 47 Louisville and No. 50 Kent State join Cincinnati, Indiana, Miami (OH), Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Ohio State, Southern Illinois, Toledo, UCF and Wisconsin in the tournament field.
Last season, the Orange and Blue took the Boilermaker Invitational title with a score 35-under par. Illinois finished 32 strokes ahead of runner-up Louisville (-3).
