WINDERMERE, Fla. -  Fighting Illini men's golf worked its way up the leaderboard on Monday, using a 3-under par second round team score to climb three spots at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational. Freshman Michael Feagles led the squad with a 6-under par tally for the day, as he moved into a tie for 16th individually.  Illinois currently sits in a tie for seventh on the leaderboard with a total score 4-over par. Florida (-16) is leading the tournament, while Vanderbilt (-7) and Purdue (-3) make up the top three teams.
"I was happy with the way we came out of the blocks today," head coach Mike Small said. "We came out early, led by Michael Feagles. It was a better round than the first one, and we made some progress, but tomorrow we need to close out this tournament like we always take pride in doing."
Feagles was on fire on Monday, starting the day with four birdies in his first five holes. He birdied a total of nine holes on the day, combining his 6-under par second round score with a 6-over par first round tally for a total score at even par. Â
"Feagles showed us a lot today," Small said. "He took yesterday's struggle and turned it in to a fantastic round, making nine birdies today. It's a special day when one player makes more birdies than the rest of the team. He showed a lot of pride and toughness coming back from yesterday's round."
Sophomore Edoardo Lipparelli and junior Dylan Meyer join Feagles among the top 25 individuals as the two are currently 1-over par and in a tie for 21st. Meyer shot 1-under par on Monday, posting three birdies in the round. Lipparelli also carded three birdies for the day.
Freshman Bryan Baumgarten shot 3-over par on Monday for a total tally of 5-over par. He is currently tied for 41st individually. Junior Nick Hardy sits 7-over par through two rounds of play, tied for 51st individually.
The final round of play at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational will begin tomorrow at 7 a.m. CT. One of the top collegiate tournaments, the event takes place at Isleworth Golf & Country Club, which boasts a 7,544-yard, Par 72 course.
