WINDERMERE, Fla. - Sophomore Edoardo Lipparelli led the Illini through the first round of play at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational as he shot even par to sit among the top 25 individuals. As a team, Illinois shot 7-over par to sit in 10th overall. Florida and Purdue are tied for the tournament lead after closing the round at 5-under par.
"Edoardo hit a lot of quality shots today that, as a coaching staff, we're very proud of," head coach Mike Small said. He had a few loose ones, as did the entire team, but Edoardo persevered through those on his way to a good round. As a team, we pride ourselves in finishing off rounds of golf, and today we didn't get that done. After a tough day, this is the perfect opportunity for us to look at ourselves, and our games, and make the appropriate adjustments."
Lipparelli started the day on a high note, birdieing his first hole. He added consecutive birdies on the sixth and seventh holes to negate two bogeys earlier in the round, and he made the turn at even par. Lipparelli also negated a bogey on the back nine with a birdie on the 13th hole to stay even for the day. He is tied for 18th individually.
Junior Dylan Meyer and freshman Bryan Baumgarten finished the round 2-over par to tie for 38th individually. Meyer added three birdies to the Illini tally in his round, while Baumgarten birdied two holes on the back nine.
Junior Nick Hardy closed the day 3-over par to tie for 43rd individually, while freshman Michael Feagles is currently 6-over par and tied for 62nd.
