CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois women's golf team is back in action and heads to its debut tournament of the 2015 fall campaign in the Minnesota Invitational. The two-day, three-round event will be hosted by the Golden Gophers for the third-straight year at the Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Illinois returns to the par 72 venue with a yardage of 6,119 for the third-consecutive year. Action opens on Monday, Sept. 14, with two rounds, followed by the final round on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
Traveling to this year's competition will be several familiar Illinois faces. Representing the upper classmen will be junior Stephanie Miller, who led the Orange and Blue unit with an individual finish of T-21st at last year's event. Joining Miller in their sophomore campaigns will be Dana Gattone, Grace Park and Chayanid Prapassarangkul, in addition to Pailin Ruttanasupagid, who will see her first collegiate action as an individual at the invitational.
Aside from the Illinois Challenge, an exhibition with Illinois State, this is the first time that the four-member sophomore class has all traveled to an event.
Also traveling for the first time with the Fighting Illini is lone freshman, Bing Singhsumalee. The Naperville, Illinois, native has some big numbers to uphold, as last season Illinois was led by a freshman at seven of its 11 tournaments in addition to three finishes in the top three of the leaderboard.
As a team at the 2014 Minnesota Invitational, Illinois finished 10th in the 14-team field. They Orange and Blue unit composed of Miller, Prapassarangkul, Gattone, Park and Emily Joers turned in a reading of 319 in the opening round but responded with the lowest second round score (293) of the entire tournament field to get back in the running. In the final round, Illinois posted a mark of 308 for a three-round total of 920. Miller and Prapassarangkul each fired an even-par round of 72 for the Illini's lowest carding.
Other Big Ten teams at the event will be Purdue and the hosts, Minnesota. Kent State, GRU Augusta, East Carolina, Colorado, Texas, Houston, Kansas Kentucky and TCU round out the rest of the field. Eight individuals, including Ruttanasupagid, fill in the remaining spots.
The Illinois tee times begin at 8:35 and continue through 9:25 with golfers taking their opening swings in 10-minute increments. UI start order reads: Park, Gattone, Miller, Singhsumalee, Prapassarangkul and Ruttanasupagid.
