Small, Detry and Hardy Highlight yearly Conference Awards for Illinois

ROSEMONT, Ill. - Head Coach Mike Small was named Big Ten Men's Golf Coach of the Year on Tuesday (April 28), as announced by the league office. Small was joined by freshman Nick Hardy and junior Thomas Detry who were named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Big Ten Player of the Year, respectively. The honor marks the seventh in his career for Small, and comes after he led his team to their 13th Big Ten Championship last weekend. The Illini won the tournament by 32-strokes, while Hardy earned Co-Medalist honors. Hardy's honors mark the fifth consecutive medalist from Illinois.

Detry's individual conference honor marks the fourth-straight year that an Illini has been named Big Ten Player of the Year. It is the eighth time that Illinois has received the award. Hardy marks the fifth Illini to be named Freshman of the Year.

Senior Brian Campbell joins Charlie Danielson, Detry and Hardy as All-Big Ten First team selections. The recognition marks the second year in a row that Detry, Danielson and Campbell have been unanimous selections to the All-Big Ten First Team. Both Campbell and Detry were named to the Second Team in 2013. Freshman Dylan Meyer earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors, as he is coming off of a top-10 performance at the Big Ten Championships. Meyer has placed among the top-10 individuals in three tournaments this season.

Senior Brian Campbell was also named the team's Sportsmanship Award Honoree. Campbell and the Illini are having a record season, as they have earned seven tournament wins, the most for an Illini team since 2008-09. Detry leads the team with a stroke average 70.44 on the season. He is shooting just under 69 for the spring, however. The trio of Detry, Danielson and Campbell all boast stroke averages at or below 71 this season.

Coming off of a Big Ten Championship title, the Illini will await their NCAA Regional fate. NCAA Mens' Golf regional announcements are scheduled to be released on Monday, For more information on Illinois Men's Golf, go to FightingIllini.com or follow the team on Twitter (@IlliniMGolf).
