CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - From Friday, April 24, through Sunday, April 26, the Illinois women's golf team will compete at the 2015 Big Ten Golf Championships. Action will take place at The Fort Golf Resort in Indianapolis, Indiana, nearly the Orange and Blue's backyard. Illini golfers will tee off from 7:30-8:30 a.m. CT on the first hole on both Friday and Saturday. Action on Sunday will open between 7-8 a.m. CT for the Illinois competitors.
The Fort Golf Resort will feature a par-72, 6,221-yard set of links. Just like last weekend at the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational, each team will field six golfers with the top four scores each round counting towards the team tally. Admission is free for spectators. The field will feature 14 Big Ten teams for the first time, thanks to the addition of Maryland and Rutgers.
Northwestern took the top seed at this year's event. Ohio State is seeded second, while Purdue claimed the third slot. Also ahead of the Illini, Wisconsin and Michigan State are in the fourth and fifth spots. Seeds six through 10 feature Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan and Iowa in order. Rounding out the field are Nebraska, Penn State, Maryland and Rutgers.
Traveling for Renee Slone's unit are the regulars. The freshman trio of Grace Park, Dana Gattone and Chayanid Prapassarangkul will be present, along with sophomores Emily Joers and Stephanie Miller. Representing the senior class will be Pimploy Thirati.
Last season, Illinois opened the event with a carding of 316 in the first round, a score that tied for ninth entering the final two rounds. Saturday saw a completely different Illini team that ended the day in sole possession of fourth place. In the closing round, the Fighting Illini posted a team reading of 301, which secured a tie for the program's highest finish in the past 12 seasons (fifth in 2012 and 2002). Miller finished with a share of 15th at the event while Joers tied for 34th.
This will be the fourth season that the Big Ten Championships are held at a neutral site, but the first year at The Fort Golf Resort. In the seasons prior, the event took place at the Pete Dye Course in French Lick, Indiana. Before the neutral sites, Big Ten institutions took turns hosting the event.
The event will be aired as a delayed recording on May 6, at 6 p.m. CT on the Big Ten Network.
