TORONTO, Canada - Fighting Illini freshman swimmer Samantha Stratford competed in the Canadian Swimming Trials this past weekend. The event took place at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre on April 1-4.
"It was fantastic to have Sam compete at the Canadian Trials," said head coach Sue Novitsky. "To have the honor to compete for the right to represent your country in international events is such a great experience for any athlete."
Stratford competed in five events over the course of the four-day event. She began the weekend with a 30th-place finish in the 50 fly, clocking 28.21. Her second event was the 400 IM, in which she finished 22nd with a time of 5:03.68. She also competed in the 100 fly (1:02.91) and 200 fly (2:23.12), finishing 34th and 30th, respectively. Stratford's final event of the weekend, the 200 IM, produced her best finish of weekend. She finished in 2:21.32 to finish 21st.
"Sam did well with the quick turn around from the Big Ten Championships," Novitsky stated. "She got right back to work and had a solid training block heading into the meet. Next we will focus on what we can continue to work on to get her focused for the next collegiate season and the Olympic Team Trials."
