CHAMPAIGN, ILL - University of Illinois football coach Tim Beckman today named Ryan Cubit to his full-time coaching staff as quarterbacks coach. Cubit just finished his first season at Illinois as the director of football student-athlete development.
"Ryan has been working toward a full-time coaching role for several years, first at Western Michigan, and the last two years here at Illinois," Beckman said. "The administrative experience he picked up the last two years, along with his on-field coaching experience at Western Michigan, made him a great candidate for our open position. I've watched how he interacts with our student-athletes, along with the prospective recruits who visited our campus, and he is extremely prepared for this role. He'll be able to fit in immediately."
With the addition of Ryan Cubit, his father, Bill Cubit, will remain as offensive coordinator while also coaching running backs. Alex Golesh will take over as special teams coordinator while also coaching the tight ends and specialists. The younger Cubit takes on the recruiting coordinator role.
"I am honored and thankful to take on the new role on this outstanding staff and work for a great leader in Coach Beckman," Ryan Cubit said. "Coach Beckman has instilled a family culture within our program that has created close bonds and a positive atmosphere. These are great kids that work extremely hard and I'm excited to play an integral part in helping them grow as football players and men. There is great enthusiasm inside this football program as we continue to take strides everyday toward our goals, and I'm thrilled to work as hard as I can to help and be part of something special here at the University of Illinois."
Cubit joined the Illinois staff prior to the 2013 season and served two years as director of football student-athlete development. In that role, he oversaw all on-campus activities of student-athletes in the Illinois football program, while also managing all on-campus admissions for incoming freshmen and transfers. The Cubits are the first father-son duo on the coaching staff in the history of the Illini football program.
As a player at Western Michigan, Cubit helped engineer the golden age of offense for the Broncos from 2008-12, guiding Alex Carder to ta record-setting campaign in 2011 that included 3,873 yards passing and five games of 400-plus passing yards. Carder was the fourth consecutive All-Mid-American Conference honoree under Cubit, as he earned the award in 2010 and 2011 after Tim Hiller was named to the All-MAC teams in 2008 and 2009.
As a player, Cubit finished his career tied for the career completion percentage record at WMU (60.2 percent) and was fifth in career passing yards (4,729). He played three seasons in Kalamazoo after starting his career at Rutgers. Cubit graduated with a degree in business administration in 2006 and completed a master's of business administration in 2008. He led WMU to its first bowl berth in nearly 20 years as he guided the Broncos to the 2007 International Bowl.
Cubit has two daughters, Lila and Claire.
