CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The NACGC/W announced the regular-season All-American honors with the Illini picking up five awards. Illinois totaled one First Team and four Second Team honors, as Mary Jane Horth, Sunny Kato and Giana O'Connor each earned recognition for their stellar seasons.
Sophomore Mary Jane Horth was named First Team All-American on bars and Second Team All-American in the all-around. Senior Sunny Kato was also named All-American in two events, earning Second Team All-American on bars and beam. Junior Giana O'Connor was named Second Team All-American in the all-around. The five regular season All-American selections in one season are the most in program history.
"Becoming a regular season All-American is a huge accomplishment," head coach Kim Landrus said. "With the amount of talent in the NCAA, to earn this honor speaks to the level of consistency, hard work and dedication each of these athletes have had throughout the 2015 season. I could not be more proud of Mary Jane, Sunny and Giana. They exemplify contagious qualities that have pushed our entire team to realize its potential this year."
Horth, Kato and O'Connor excelled this season, as they each were named 2015 First-Team All-Big Ten and named to the 2015 Big Ten All-Championships Team. O'Connor currently ranks 10th in the nation in the all-around with an RQS of 39.470. Horth ranks 14th in the all-around (39.430) and eighth on bars (9.915), while Kato ranks 13th on bars (9.905) and 15th on beam (9.900). All three gymnasts have left their mark on the record books. O'Connor tied the school record all-around score of 39.625 and Kato holds the school record on beam (9.950). Horth has posted the second-best bars (9.975) and the fifth-best all-around score (39.575) in Illini history.
All-Americans were chosen based on their RQS entering NCAA Regional competition. The top eight ranked gymnasts in each event and the all-around earned first-team accolades, while second-team honors went to those ranked 9-16, including ties. NCAA All-American awards will still be given at the NCAA Championships held April 17-19 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Horth, Kato, O'Connor and the rest of the Fighting Illini will compete in the Morgantown Regional Saturday April 4 for a spot in the NCAA Championships.
