Illini Have Strong Showing on Day One at Iowa State

AMES, Iowa - The Illinois men's track and field team began a weekend of competition at the Iowa State Classic on Friday. On the first day of competition, the Illini had three athletes advance from prelims to Saturday's finals, five top-five finishes and an addition to the all-time top-10 list in an event.

Cole Henderson was one of those three athletes to advance from Friday's prelims into Saturday's finals. He recorded the second-fast preliminary time in the 60m dash, clocking 6.83 to earn his spot in tomorrow's race. The final of the 60m starts tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. CT. Henderson also grabbed a top-five finish, taking fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.86m (22' 6.25").

The 60m hurdle preliminary round produced the other two Illini that advanced to Saturday's finals. Cam Viney was the top performer in prelims, racing to a time of 7.90. David Kendziera qualified for the finals with the fifth-fastest time, finishing in 7.99. The final of the 60m hurdles will take place tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. CT.

In addition to Henderson's fifth-place long jump, the field events produced three other top-five finishers for Illinois. In the pole vault, Matthew Bane had a season-best clearance of 5.16m (16' 11") to grab second, while Mitch Mammoser tied his best performance of the season with a mark of 5.01m (16' 5.25"), good for fifth. In the weight throw, Davis Fraker finished fourth with a toss of 20.95m (68' 9").

The final top-five performance of the day for Illinois came from Brandon Stryganek in the 200m. Stryganek finished the race in 21.47 to take third.

The Illini who made his way into the school's all-time top-10 list was Ian Barnett. He completed the 5,000m in career best 13:56.80, the third-best time in Illinois history.

Illinois will look to add more top-five finishes and all-time great performances on the second day of action at the Iowa State Classic. The Illini will resume competition tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. CT with the men's high jump.
