OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - The Illinois men's tennis squad concluded play this afternoon at the Olympia Fields Country Club Fighting Illini Invitational. The Orange and Blue spilt their doubles matches, going 1-1, and struggled in singles play as freshman Aleks Vukic was the lone Illini to garner a singles win on Sunday.
Thus, the Illini finished with a 14-7 record on the three day tournament going 11-5 in singles competition and 3-2 in doubles play. In addition, Connor Glennon of Memphis, Jared Hiltzik, Tim Kopinski and Quentin Monaghan of Notre Dame all scored 24 points on weekend and Monaghan, by virtue of sets won, was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
"It's a great honor to be apart of this event at Olympia Fields, we love going there," Brad Dancer said. "We had some great matches and our guys showed a great amount of toughness to be resilient when playing maybe not at their best. That resiliency is a good attribute of our team."
Kopinski and Hiltzik remained undefeated in doubles when they took down Covalschi/Schnurrenberger (ND), 8-2 in the morning Sunday. Vukic's singles victory come against Robbie Mudge in a 6-1, 6-4 win.
"Aleks Vukic struggled with the quick turnaround from Georgia last weekend but righted the ship and got it together to finish strong on the weekend," Brad Dancer said. "Tim Kopinski and Jared Hiltzik did a great job starting 3-0 and did a superb job in doubles as well. They didn't play their best today but you have to give credit to their opponents."
Despite dropping their singles matches today, Kopinski and Hiltzik had a strong debut this weekend as both finished with a 6-1 record.
Up next for Illinois is the Alabama Four in Tuscaloosa, Alabama starting Sept. 26.
