Each week the Illini in the NFL update provides coverage on how former Fighting Illini football players fared during the previous week. In week two, Vontae Davis and Hugh Thornton had solid performances on Monday Night Football and Corey Liuget helped lead the Chargers to a win over the Super Bowl champion Seahawks.
Vontae Davis, CB, Indianapolis Colts - Started on Monday Night Football against the Eagles and recorded four solo tackles as well as two pass deflections in a 30-27 loss.
Hugh Thornton, OL, Indianapolis Colts - Started at guard and protected Andrew Luck as he threw for 3 touchdowns. Thornton also helped create space for the Colt's run game, which rushed for a total of 169 yards on Monday night against the Eagles.
Alan Ball, CB, Jacksonville Jaguars - Started for the second week in a row and compiled four solo tackles and a pass deflection in a 41-10 defeat to Washington.
Pierre Thomas, RB, New Orleans Saints - Totaled 32 total yards of offense against the Cleveland Browns and averaged 5.3 yards per touch during the Saints' 26-24 loss.
A.J. Jenkins, WR, Kansas City Chiefs - Caught three passes for a total of 16 yards against the Denver Broncos. He currently serves as a backup to starter, Donnie Avery.
Corey Liuget, DE, San Diego Chargers - Started against the Seahawks and recorded two tackles to help lead the Chargers to a 30-21 win against the defending champs.
Jeff Cumberland, TE, New York Jets - Made his second start of the season and caught one pass for 14 yards in a 31-24 loss to the Packers.
Michael Hoomanawanui, TE, New England Patriots - Started against the Vikings and recorded his first reception of the season. He currently serves primarily as a blocking TE, with Rob Gronkowski playing the role of pass-catching TE.
Akeem Spence, DT, Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Did not start, but compiled two solo tackles in action against the Rams in a 19-17 loss.
Steve Weatherford, P, New York Giants - Punted four times against the Giants and averaged 44.3 yards per punt and totaled 177 net yards in New York's loss to the Cardinals.
Jon Asamoah, OL, Atlanta Falcons - Started and helped protect Matt Ryan who threw for 231 yards and a touchdowns as well as helping Chiefs running backs rush for 97 yards.
Tavon Wilson, FS, New England Patriots - Played at Minnesota on Sunday, but did not record a tackle in the Patriots' 30-7 route of the Vikings.
Whitney Mercilus, DE, Houston Texans - Started in place of the injured Jadeveon Clowney and recorded a solo tackle during the Texans' 30-14 victory at Oakland.
Brandon Lloyd, WR, San Francisco 49ers - Is currently one of the backup wide receivers for the 49ers, but did not see any playing time in a 28-20 loss to the Bears on Sunday night.
Glenn Foster, DL, New Orleans Saints - Did not play in the Saints' loss to the Browns and serves the backup for Cameron Jordan at defensive end.
Michael Buchanan, DE, New England Patriots - Did not play Sunday against the Vikings. He is currently the backup to starting defensive end, Rob Ninkovich.
