Markham, Barnett Wrap Up Weekend Action for the Illini

Payton Jordan Invitational Results

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The Illinois men's track and field team sent two distance runners to the Payton Jordan Invitational on Sunday. Sophomores Liam Markham and Ian Barnett represented the Illini in the USTFCCCA Division I National Meet of the Week that featured teams from around the country, including No. 1 Florida, No. 3 Arkansas, No. 4 Oregon and No. 9 Texas Tech.

Barnett ran just shy of his personal-best time in the 5,000m to place second in his section. The Glen Ellyn, Illinois, native clocked a time of 14:00.74 to cross the finish line second in section four. Barnett ran the seventh-fastest 5,000m time in the Big Ten two weeks ago at the Mt. SAC Relays (13:59.65).

Markham clocked his second-fastest time of the season in section three of the 1,5000m. The Limerick, Ireland, native crossed the finish line in 3:44.58 to finish tenth in his section. Markham currently holds the third-fastest time in the Big Ten in the event, 3:42.33, which was set two weeks ago at the Bryan Clay Invitational.

Illinois has next weekend off before traveling to West Lafayette, Indiana on May 16-18 for the Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
