FLUSHING, N.Y. - Fighting Illini men's tennis seniors Tim Kopinski and Ross Guignon fell short of claiming their first national title Sunday afternoon after a 6-3, 7-5 loss to No. 19 [1] Hanfmann/Quiroz at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. The finals appearance at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships marks the best run in senior duo's career, improving upon their semifinal appearance from last season.
"First off, congrats to USC. They came up with some pretty amazing play when they needed it most, to say the least," assistant coach Marcos Asse said. "Ross and Tim had an awesome run and I am so proud of the way they competed and carried themselves throughout the tournament. I know it doesn't feel like it right now for these two, but they are among the elite and should feel good about that. Ross and Tim will definitely look to make waves in our Challenger in less than 48 hours, so not much time to feel down. I know they're excited to compete in Atkins for the hometown fans very soon."
Entering the tournament unseeded, No. 2 Kopinski and Guignon reached the finals with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(7) victory over No. 31 McDonald/Redlicki (UCLA) on Saturday afternoon. After receiving a first round by, the duo defeated Corintelli/Shane (UVA) 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16. The Illini seniors then took down Gregurovic/Ostojic of Wichita State 7-6(4), 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Kopinski and Guignon entered the weekend as an at-large selection after and up-and-down fall season. Guignon was forced to miss ITA Midwest Regionals with an injury. Despite a first round loss at the ITA All-American Championships in early October, the tandem reached the consolation finals.
