CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Fighting Illini sophomore Stephanie Miller has been selected as the Big Ten Co-Golfer of the Week. The Elgin, Illinois native helped Renee Slone's Illinois team to a weekend victory at the Hoosier Fall Invitational.
Miller shares the honor with Hannah Kim of Northwestern. Freshman Dana Gattone also earned the Golfer of the Week award back during the first week of the 2014-15 fall season. Gattone was the first Illini to receive the recognition since Miller did so during the 2013-14 fall campaign.
The Adlai E. Stevenson graduate was an integral part of the Illini's win at the Hoosier Fall Invitational. Miller shot a 72 during Friday's round of stroke play to determine the match play seedings for the remainder of the tournament. The even-par round tied the sophomore for second place in the individual standings.
In the first round of match play Miller faced off against Boston College's Jocelyn Chia and was able to pick up the deciding point on the 18th hole. As the Illini took on the top-seeded host, Indiana, Miller battled Ana Sanjuan through 18 holes before falling on the 19th during the darkness-delayed round. In the championship match Miller took down Fresno State's Samantha Spencer 3&2 as the Illini topped the Bulldogs 3-2 for the title.
Head coach Renee Slone shared "Stephanie posted a very good round during stroke play qualifying in challenging conditions. Her two under par 34 on the back nine was impressive in the wind." Slone continued "Her determination and will to win were key elements in her matches as she birdied the 18th hole twice.... once to win a match outright and another to square the match and send it to extra holes."
Through four fall tournaments Miller has carded three even-par rounds in addition to holding one of the top two spots for the Illini in each competition. Before the season got underway, Stephanie was also tabbed as one of the Big Ten players to watch.
Miller and the Illini will look to push the team's winning streak to three as they prepare for the final tournament of the fall. From November 2-4 Slone's crew will compete at the Jim West Challenge in Boerne, Texas.
